Gallatin Canyon is surrounded by some of America’s most pristine land. The Spanish Peaks Wilderness area and the Yellowstone ecosystem help comprise over 3 million acres of land set aside forever for protection and enjoyment. Several mountain peaks exceed 11,000 feet in the area, including Big Sky’s own Lone Mountain at 11,188 feet. With this serving as your backdrop, look forward to a visit filled with the finest in outdoor activity and grandeur. The rugged 78,000-acre Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area, part of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, is locatd north of Big Sky and west of Highway 191. The steep Spanish Peaks contain some of the oldest rocks in North America. The 3-billion year old metamorphic rocks were sculpted by glaciers, wind and water. Within the area are 25 peaks rising above 10,000 feet, including Gallatin Peak at 11,015 feet. Below the peaks are wide subalpine meadows, forested valleys and more than 175 lakes.
