The Bridger Mountain Range (named after famed mountain man, Jim Bridger), lies to the north of Bozeman. It's home to the Bridger Mountains National Recration Trail and Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Many recreational opportunites can be found in this scenic mountain range because ofits close proximity to Bozeman, yet this area retains it remoteness. Birds of Prey SitesEach autumn, usually in the first two weeks of October, you can view magnificent birds of prey on their migration south. Best times are usually 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Here you can experience the largest concentration of migrating Golden Eagles in the lower 48 states. There are two good viewing sites in the Bridger Mountains. One is located at Bridger Bowl, 16 miles north of Bozeman. Viewing can be reached by hiking up the Bridger Lift area. The Forest Service maintains a raptor monitoring station here and will be available to answer questions. The climb is 2,100'. The second area recommended is Sacagawea Peak. This peak is the highest in the Bridgers and can be accessed from Fairy Lake. Again, some steep hiking is required, and no personnel will be at this site. Brochures are available. For information on the fall raptor migration, contact the Gallatin National Forest at 406-587-6752. |
